3 Common College Essay Mistakes To Avoid
3 Common College Essay Mistakes To Avoid Your essay should exemplify the manner in which you think. Instead of basing your character off of grades and standardized test scores, the essay provides the reader with a sense of your personality and views from your perspective. So conserve your efforts and work smarter, not harder. Find the topic that you can use at all or almost all the schools on your list and write as few essays as possible. While most applications wonât open for the season until August 1, the essay prompts for this year are available. A good introduction should identify your topic, provide essential context, and indicate your particular focus in the essay. A strong conclusion will provide a sense of closure to the essay while again placing your concepts in a somewhat wider context. It will also, in some instances, add a stimulus to further thought. Since no two essays are the same, no single formula will automatically generate an introduction and conclusion for you. But the following guidelines will help you to construct a suitable beginning and end for your essay. Since the admissions committee is reading hundreds of essays, itâs your job to move them, make them laugh, and force them to realize that they need you at their institution. I recommend that students try to find an adult other than their parents to help with essay editing. Parents are blinded by love and perhaps perfection. Each student needs to be able to claim authentic ownership of their essays. Your English teacher reads your essay to assign one grade out of many. The admissions officer reads to determine if they should offer you one spot out of probably relatively very few. Many applicants will have high GPAâs and SAT scores, volunteer in a local organization, or be the president of a club or captain of a sports team. Admissions officers are looking for something, anything, to distinguish your essay from the pile. While it is okay to have a parent proof an essay, they are not always the best option. Asking someone who is slightly more removed from the application process may be the wisest route to go. While parents mean well, any constructive feedback may be misinterpreted, creating conflict at what can already be a stressful time. Teachers, guidance counselors, even friends are viable candidates when looking for a second opinion on your writing. Introductions and conclusions play a special role in the academic essay, and they frequently demand much of your attention as a writer. Essays are your one opportunity to share your voice, your unique experiences, and your perspective. At the top 250 schools, your essays generally account for 25% of your overall application. This is only slightly behind the 30% for extracurriculars. Essays are actually ahead of the 20% for grades and coursework, 15% for test scores, and 10% for recommendations and interviews. I do not believe that parents make good essay editors because they are not admissions officers. Mom and Dad may be great help during the brainstorming process of generating essay topics. Parents may know other details about the student that they should include in the essay. Therefore, they can devote more time and resources to each individual application. You might be surprised to learn that essays are that important, but keep in mind that at top schools, there are at least 4 academically-qualified candidates for every open spot. To truly assess an applicantâs fit with the school, admissions officers need the essays. They do not know what admissions officers are looking for. For the same reason, I do not think English teachers make great admissions essay readers. Your English teacher reads your essay as 1 out of 30. The admissions officers reads as 1 out of 1000âs and possibly even 10,000 or more. Parents are also a great second pair of eyes for grammar and spelling errors. I would still suggest that a English professional still read over the essay for expert editing purposes. However, parents should not try to change the voice of the student, which can be difficult to refrain from. The essay needs to be a reflection of the studentâs creativity, writing ability and personality; not the parent.

College Essay Examples A great college essay gives the college an opportunity to see who you really are. Pick a meaningful experience and take the reader through your process of self-discovery. A man that she adored but discovered that he was a cocaine addict. The college essay is an important component of the college application process. You should discuss the pros and cons of disclosing your disability with your family, friends, and school counselors to decide the right decision for you. It is a personal decision that will depend on your own disability and how it has affected your life. There is no requirement to disclose your disability anywhere in the college application. In fact, usually the essay is the only way you would be able to disclose your disability. This is a personal decision for you to make on your own. College admissions officers tell us time and again that too many essays come to them sanitized. They want to read a genuine story written by the child in the childâs words and the childâs voice. Jodi has several years of experience guiding Massachusetts students through the college admissions process, and she offers some wise words below. We have found that students write better college essays in less time with feedback and editing from someone who is experienced in offering guidance. When parents get involved in the nitty gritty of a college application, some families find conflict arises. You might think, âI donât have anything like that.â All of us have experiences that have impacted our lives. Sit down with your folks and talk about your family and your âgrowing-upâ years. Make sure when you write your essay that you donât just ramble on and on. The best essays are the ones that provide real insight into who you are and how you think. Your essay should definitely provide perspective on you that augments what is found in the rest of your applicationâ¦.perhaps highlighting an area of passion for you that may not otherwise be obvious. The essays that read best are the ones written authentically, and from the heart. There is no definitive answer to disclosing your disability in your college essay. She took the reader through the stages of loving, hating, being disappointed, ashamed and finally acceptance, understanding and again loving while âDadâ was going through treatment. She allowed herself to be vulnerable which made the essay dynamite. Another student talked about the struggles of having learning disabilities and the pain that he experienced during his educational career. If your situation is one where parents can offer opinions that are helpful and if you are the kind of student who is open to listening to suggestions, then surely parents can be good editors. Further, if you have parents who know grammar and writing conventions and can recognize flaws, go ahead and ask parents to help. For many students, finding an objective evaluator who is not a relative to help edit the essay is the best bet. Having a degree in English and being a published writer of college planning articles, and having edited hundreds of essays for students, I would be happy to help you too. It is okay for a parent to review a childâs essay; it is not okay for a parent to take over a childâs essay, tell her what words to use, what story to write, what message to send.

#1 College Essay Writing Service
#1 College Essay Writing Service After weeks of songwriting and immersing myself in music, I determined that trust, vulnerability, and acceptance are loveâs inherent ingredients. I found I could apply my acceptance of his relapse to different experiences in my life, whether teenage gossip or catastrophe. I canât control the actions of others; I can only alter my perspective. Thanks to my mentors, I can identify and create almost every type of Northeastern mayfly, caddisfly, and stonefly. As I got older, I realized that there are more worry lines than laugh lines. After years of fighting myself and others for control, I realized it was my struggle for control that was restricting me in the first place. After that night, dad immediately resumed working his AA program, but I found myself stuck to work out my emotions alone. I was as much of a clean slate to them as they were to me. My previous need for control had come from growing up with strict parents, coaches, and expectations from my school and community. Learning in an environment without lenience for error or interpretation meant I fought for control wherever I could get it. This manifested itself in the form of overthinking every move and pass in soccer games, restricting the creativity of my play, and hurting the team. A man hurrying by bumped into my shoulder as I continued down the street, bringing my mind back to the present. Nobody there knew who I was or cared about my accomplishments. I seemed to be removed from the little town as I continued to wander. I felt naked as my safety blankets of being recognized or at the very least understood on a verbal level were stripped away, for the Puerto Ricans did not care about my achievements or past life. I heard nothing but the gentle hum of the air conditioner accompanied by the whirring of the electric foot rasp, and the occasional ring of a phone echoing through the hallway of closed doors. What Makes A Great College Essay?
What Makes A Great College Essay? Of course, those 28 months were too short to fully understand all five families, but I learned from and was shaped by each of them. I donât remember a single time that they argued about the games. Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. The host mom Shellie was a single mom who had two of her own sons and two Russian daughters that she had adopted. Dawn, the host mom didnât like winter, and Mark, the host dad, didnât like summer. After dinner, we would all play Wii Sports together. I was the king of bowling, and Dawn was the queen of tennis. I donât remember a single time that they argued about the games.Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. In the living room were six or seven huge amplifiers and a gigantic chandelier hung from the high ceiling. At first, the non-stop visits from strangers made me nervous, but soon I got used to them. I remember one night, a couple barged into my room while I was sleeping. My second family was the Martinez family, who were friends of the Watkinsâs. The host dad Michael was a high school English teacher and the host mom Jennifer (who had me call her âJenâ) taught elementary school. She had recently delivered a baby, so she was still in the hospital when I moved into their house. The Martinez family did almost everything together. When he reveals each lesson at the end, one after the other, we sense how all these seemingly random events are connected. We realize this writer has been carefully constructing this piece all along; we see the underlying structure. But the best dimension that language brought to my life is interpersonal connection. When I speak with people in their native language, I find I can connect with them on a more intimate level. One day, my mom brought home fresh cabbages and red pepper sauce. She brought out the old silver bowl and poured out the cabbages, smothering them with garlic and salt and pepper. It would be fair to say that this was all due to Shellieâs upbringing. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellieâs hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. The kids always had something warm to eat, and were always on their best behavior at home and in school. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellieâs hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. We made pizza together, watched Shrek on their cozy couch together, and went fishing on Sunday together. On rainy days, Michael, Jen and I would sit on the porch and listen to the rain, talking about our dreams and thoughts. This essay could work for promptâs 1, 2, 5 and 7 for the Common App. Later, I even refused to attend the same elementary school and wouldnât even eat meals with him. This essay could work for promptâs 1, 2 and 7 for the Common App. To find out if your essay passes the Great College Essay Test like this one did, go here. He would scoff at me when he would beat me in basketball, and when he brought home his painting of Bambi with the teacherâs sticker âAwesome! â on top, he would make several copies of it and showcase them on the refrigerator door. But I retreated to my desk where a pile of âPlease draw this again and bring it to me tomorrowâ papers lay, desperate for immediate treatment. I had been typing an English essay when I heard my cat's loud meows and the flutter of wings. I had turned slightly at the noise and had found the barely breathing bird in front of me.

4 Tips For Writing A Successful College Admission Essay
4 Tips For Writing A Successful College Admission Essay Before asking others to give feedback, really try to finalize the essay to the best of your ability. Once you have completed your application essay, be sure to find a couple of people you trust to look over your work before you submit it. I donât recommend a friend who is afraid to correct your mistakes, or a parent, if you can help it. Make sure to get things into them ahead of time and be respectful of their time. If you didnât get your drafts to them in due time to give feedback, donât get upset if they tell you that they wonât sacrifice their vacation to help you. Like I mentioned before, continue to look for opportunities to reuse drafts for other schools. You should be reaching critical mass around this time of having an essay draft for just about any prompt that a school will give you. Youâll just have to adjust word counts or the focus of the learning point a little bit. Yet, this book helped me ground all the swirling thoughts in my head into one short page, 1000 words. It may have been published in 1978, but it's still 100% relevant in today's college environment. It's funny, filled with examples, and quite a joy to read. The UCs rarely change the prompts and even if they did change them, the changes would probably be announced by now. Just like it says, some students are still not satisfied by what theyâve come up with, but think theyâre really close to finding the right topic. Remember, your main essay is the only essay that you put THIS much work into because of how important it is. In order to give an essay a proper chance in the editing process, it needs to be crafted to the vision that you have for it. Great essays ideas are oftentimes thrown away because the first version of an essay was executed poorly and readers are unable to even comprehend the message behind it. There are student personal statement examples and vivid examples from famous writers. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. Even now, I'm getting it as a gift for some rising high school seniors as they embark on their undergrad app journey. Another great thing about this book are the examples. Donât go at this journey alone, especially in the editing process, and always ask for help. Also, I know that procrastination and writing fatigue are real obstacles in this process. You guys arenât essay robots able to churn out quality drafts on a strict schedule. This timeline wasnât meant to be followed exactly. If this sounds like you, please share your story. A teacher or family friend would be a great choice. Since you already know how itâs supposed to read, and youâre accustomed to reading it, itâs often easier for another person to catch your mistakes. First off, make sure to get your early admissions applications submitted. A majority of deadlines are Nov. 1st, but some are Oct 15th, so make sure to not miss those. To be safe, try to submit your applications a week or two ahead of the deadline. Get feedback on your two Common App personal statement essays, decide one which one to use, and make final edits. If youâre really hesitant to work on essays because official updated prompts for your schools havenât come out yet, then working on the UC essays can be a safe alternative. But that doesnât mean that setting goals and putting pressure on yourself early on isnât going to help you get the ball rolling. Trust me, a little work now will go a long way towards boosting your confidence and overall preparedness throughout this process. If youâre getting any help from counselors or teachers for editing your essays, keep in mind that many of them will stop checking their emails once Christmas break starts.

The College Essay Timeline
The College Essay Timeline Different colleges have varying review processes. At almost all selective colleges however, every college essay will be read by multiple people. If a student is on the fence, not an early admit or deny, essays will probably be read multiple times by multiple people while an applicant is being discussed. That said, if they donât think they have enough to go on after 2 essays, youâve got a bigger problem. Based on my experience, we read every essay at the institutions were I served. Typically, applications received two reads and a third if the decisions were split. Find the course thatâs right for you at storytocollege.com/courses, or call us to talk to an expert at . Essays give admission officers real insight into the applicant. You might wonder how a huge school would manage reading thousands of essays, but you can trust that they hire extra staff, if necessary, to make sure the entire application gets a close look. The number of readers depends on how âborderlineâ the applicant is, and the number of applicants being processed. So do your best on that part of the application. If youâre a renegade, then you probably wonât be happy at a more conservative campus. If you spend your essay writing about how much you love city life, you might not enjoy the slower pace of a college town. Especially if you are applying to a college that is far away from your home, the admissions officers want to see that you will be happy in both the academic environment and the location of the school. You will also have to learn to bulk up the content of each paragraph. Even colleges who say their essay is âoptional,â you shoulod definitely write one. It can make all the difference in your admission decision. And most importantly, it gives them a reason to choose you as one of those students that they will bring to committee to make a case for admission. But the more selective the college, the more qualified students there will be in the pool, and often without enough space to accommodate them. In fact, the most selective colleges may receive two or three times the number of applications from high school valedictorians than they could ever admit. In cases where there are too many qualified applicants and not enough spots, admissions officers have to make distinctions about students that go beyond those qualities listed on an application. Do you seem like someone who will fit in at the school? Any longer, and chances are good that you have more than one main idea. In which case, you need to find the other secondary main ideas and give them their own paragraphs. At Story To College we teach how to find their most honest and authentic stories and shape them into powerful essays that admissions officers will remember. We provide college application essay courses and admissions courses to help all our students achieve their best results. We are excited to host our first application essay courses in Atlanta this summer, starting May 29th. So yes, they are read by all the admissions officers, particularly the ones who oversee your county and region. If you send more than the one supplemental essay suggested, thereâs no guarantee theyâll read themâ"unless they donât think they have enough to go on. Remember â" the admissions officers read thousands of essays every admissions season, and they can spot an overly polished essay a mile away. So â" yes â" itâs fine to take a quick read to look for spelling errors, but itâs not fine to write your childâs essay for him or her. Essays rarely change an admissions officerâs mind if your qualifications arenât up to the collegeâs standards. When essays do sway the vote in those cases, itâs usually because they reveal a significant hardship or other life circumstance that explains the inconsistencies. If you had such a situation that affected you, that might be worth sharing in your essay and an admissions committee will consider it. An effective college essay helps an admissions officer get to know you in ways that an application cannot. It makes them like you and picture you on campus. I dislike giving rules or formulas to students when it comes to college writing because nearly every rule or formula has both weaknesses and exceptions. But a general guideline for the paragraphs in your college essays is that they should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of a page.

Can I Use The Same Essay For More Than One Application? Many job postings require a college degree just to get an interview. An additional year of college decreases mortality rates by 15 to 19 percent, by reducing deaths from cancer and heart disease, according to a study by the Brookings Institution. , the benefits of going to college continue to rise. When youâre able to benefit socially, physically, psychologically, and emotionally, the benefits far outweigh the costs. This isnât to say that the costs donât add up, but regardless of the financial costs of whatever college you choose to attend, there are many ways to secure an education without breaking the bank. For an assignment that requires you to write four pages, you can make the estimation that youâll need to write approximately 2000 words for a single spaced paper, or 1000 words if the assignment is double spaced. Again, the type of font used can make the word count higher or lower, but itâs a good rule of thumb for those who are simply looking for a general estimation. The truth is there is no definitive answer to this question. How To Write An Effective College Essay
How To Write An Effective College Essay Now school is starting, and she hasnât even begun the unique essay for William & Mary or the conversation with a historical woman for Barnard. She considers dropping her application to Barnard but has a flash of inspiration during a study hall, envisioning herself sitting at a Jerusalem café asking Golda Meir questions about the call of leadership. She now has a short draft of the âWhy This College? â essay for Barnard and a Community essay for UVA; if she has time, sheâll tweak them later for Michigan. Beyond that, the essay is your opportunity to stand out; take advantage of it. With top schools, almost every other applicant will have a high GPA and good test scores. The essay is a chance to become three-dimensional and distinguish yourself as more than just a number on a page. It shows admissions officers who you are as a person and differentiates you from the others. It is crucial to present your true personality through your essay. Rachel takes a few days to relax after completing 11th grade before creating a spreadsheet listing her colleges. She then uses both the Common App and individual collegesâ websites to find guidelines, deadlines and essay prompts. If Rachel has established a relationship with a college admissions representative, she will ask if supplemental essay prompts for next season will change. If she hasnât been in touch with a rep, she will use this yearâs prompts as a guide. Finally, she checks the Common App to make sure supplemental essay prompts have not changed, then gets to work. She plans to write each morning and see her friends in the afternoon only if she has made real progress on her essays that day. Rachel decides to write about her local and global communities of Third Culture Kids. Donât write about something because you think it will look more impressive to admissions officers. If you choose something you are passionate about, the enthusiasm behind it will show, and that is more valuable than anything you could do solely for college admissions. Your transcript, awards, and extracurriculars tell one story. Rather, focus on aspects of you that havenât been covered yet. As for what story to fill that gap, many students havenât experienced extremely novel circumstances yet, and thatâs okay! It is more important in how you use your event to showcase your personality. No event is too mundane if you can make it show how it was pivotal to your development. Her counselor also suggests the University of Mary Washington, another Virginia public school, because itâs close to D.C. Right now, halfway around the globe, an American high school junior is gearing up for the U.S. college admissions process. To be able to tweak this essay for several colleges, Rachel will write about her most meaningful community in the first half of the essay, and then gear the second half to each college. Because UVA and Michigan request similar word counts, she will not have to adjust these for length. Rachel has won numerous awards and intends to play at the intramural level in college. She decides that would make a better topic for Michiganâs âextracurricular activityâ essay. Letâs give her the way-too-peppy name of Rachel Resilient. No generic essays come out of this process, because this is real essay writing, not essay shopping. Youâll see THREE winning essays that were part of accepted applications. This advice may have been repeated over and over, but that is because itâs true. Colleges and universities are quickly becoming more competitive than ever. Every year, the number of qualified students applying to top schools increases, resulting in drops in acceptance rates. Harvard College accepted 1,962 out of 42,749 applicants in 2018, a mere 4.59 percentâ"the lowest acceptance rate in Harvardâs history. Write a story with a setting, a beginning, a middle and an end. In drafting your essay, focus on the content of the narrative. She doesnât even start the basketball essay for Michigan now. But she does complete very rough drafts of the Catch-22 essays for UVA and George Mason. After returning from vacation, Rachel finds herself jet-lagged, distracted by friends and uninspired.

For example, at The University of Tampa, the question, âHow do you feel about the month of February? â rarely results in a boring application essay and can go in numerous directions. In fact, many schools have cool, offbeat essay questions that really provide you with the opportunity to present the admissions committee with new insight as to who you are. Itâs important to be thankful for what you have and to remember that lots of other people arenât so lucky. But if your dad still has a job, and that job is going to pay for you to go to college, and everyone in your family is still healthy, youâre a lot better off than a lot of other students. How To Write A Strong College Application Essay
How To Write A Strong College Application Essay Carol looks uncomfortable with this, but she does well. At the end of the episode, she and Kerri Weaver get into a fight about how to treat a mother whose kid died, and Carol decides that she wants to be a nurse because she loves what she does and is good at her job. However, students are more concerned when they can 't get their paragraphs to be even a third of a page long. They usually think this is because they simply have nothing more to say, which in argumentative writing is not usually the case. Usually the inability to get paragraphs to be long enough is the result of writing paragraphs that are missing key components. When Carol Hathway announces to the staff of the Cook County ER that she wants to be a doctor, the doctors on staff begin treating her differently. Instead of just having her do the kind of grunt work nurses usually get stuck with, they have her do some of the procedures that the med students usually do. If our thesis was that cell phones should NOT be controlled in college, we would explain the dangers of not having access to cell phones. You should approach all essays with the same mentality, regardless of their length. Your goal is to compose a piece that clearly guides the reader through your thoughts and reasoning. You may have to adjust how you convey those thoughts based on the length. While Carol is uncomfortable with this, she does perform well. Her skill at those procedures seems to make the point that nurses who excel at their profession are as skilled as doctors in some ways. However, later in the episode, when a mother 's young child dies, Carol insists on giving the parent time with the child to grieve, rather than moving her out of the room to make way for incoming patients. Dr. Weaver snaps at Carol, telling her that if she is going to go to medical school, she has to stop thinking like a nurse. The implication in Dr. Weaver 's criticism is clear. My own experiences with hospitals as well as the experiences of friends of mine seem unanimous on this. Nurses were great, and if you were lucky you got a doctor with a decent bedside manner. But for the most part, the professionals who really looked after loved ones were nurses. Part of this is likely the result of the different roles nurses and doctors play within the hierarchy of the hospital. With a 1,000-word scholarship essay, you will need to cite sources and provide detailed references to support your claims. 1,000+ word essay prompts are often used for writing competitions, where you may be asked to create a fictional story. The extra length gives room for extra creativity, but it also requires more time to put the perfect piece together. Weâre giving away a $1,000 scholarship to affected college students. All you need to do is submit a proof of your enrollment. Notice how our conclusion was definitive but optimistic. We explain that colleges need to adapt their rules to fit the needs of their students. Yet still, confirm that cell phone use policies should be enforced. Your essay should always have a beginning, middle, and end. Another scholarship essay length you may encounter is 1,000 words. The essay prompt may say âin under 500 wordsâ or âin at least 500 words,â which would state whether 500 is the minimum or maximum word count. If that information is not specified, write as much as you need to comprehensively address the prompt without frivolous content. 500-word scholarship essays offer more writing flexibility than 250-word essays. With a shorter word count, you are often forced to summarize long-winded thoughts into quick to-the-point snippets. 500 words give you more room to express your opinion. Yet, it is still short enough that it does not need footnotes and cited resources, usually. 500-word essays do not have to be exactly 500 words, but they should be as close as possible. Nurses worry about the feelings of people, while doctors worry about seeing the next patient or about developing enough distance emotionally so that they can move quickly from one medical crisis to another. Nurses, a profession dominated by women, are the ones who are supposed to soothe over any hurts caused by a too abrupt or too uncaring doctor.

What Is The Purpose Of College? Essay Example
What Is The Purpose Of College? Essay Example But make sure itâs still your voice,â Richardson says. While St. Johns College may ask for more in-depth answers, other schools value brevity, challenging students to write concisely. One such example, shared by Tufts, takes the reader from the studentâs love of origami to a passion for science in less than 250 words. âYou can think of the essay as the soul of the application. Yet despite its relative lack of major information, it reveals a lot about who the author is. We learn that the author knows how to turn a phrase, the author is a warm and caring person, the author has a sense of humor, and the author will bring us cookies if we admit her to our imaginary college. All in all, we see a student who is a skilled writer with a warm heart â" positive traits, to be sure. In our College Essay Clichés to Avoid post, we advised students against writing about moving to America from a foreign country. After reading links on the things that interest you, youâll understand it almost as well as someone at the school! Statistical websites like College Factual are tremendously helpful here as well, as are blogs from current and former students, Vlogs, Instagram feeds â" anything and everything is fair game. Cite a wide range of sources in your essay to show the depth of your research. This essay doesnât share many life-defining revelations; we learn, as a brief aside, that the author often cared for her younger siblings, but little beyond that. The best way to move forward is to see a college essay as a conversation. If they could, colleges would welcome you to campus and ask you questions for hoursâ"but if they did that, no one would be admitted to college until they were 43. To accelerate the process, they want you to talk on paper; let them get to know you by giving them a guided tour of your heart, your brain, and your life. If you succeed, they will look up from reading your essay, and be surprised you arenât in the room; indeed, they will swear the chair next to them is warm from your having sat in it since Tuesday. DEEP WEB RESEARCH. This should be the heart of your essay, as well as the meat and potatoes. Ask smaller questions around the prompt to get at exactly what you want to write about. The other subject to handle delicately is loss or tragedy. Colleges want to admit students who are ready to be successful members of their community. Reading the schoolâs website is not a bad start, as it will give you a basic overview of whatâs on offer. Keep an eye peeled for course listings, recent news events, maps and descriptions of important campus buildings, student run organizations, and other key terms. Then take those terms and plug them right into Google, Youtube and Linkedin! If youâre applying to a large state institution, and your numbers are strong relative to their average student body, then youâll get in on the strength of your four years of hard work. The bottom line is that they may be getting 25,000 applications, and they simply donât have time to sift through essays and recommendations. There are so many terrific free resources online â" just google âbrainstorming college essayâ and youâll be pleased with what comes up. Donât turn in your essay without someone else reading through it, Corner advises. Grammar or punctuation errors are the most unnecessary â" and unfortunately common â" mistakes that appear on The Common App. Every year, a student will address the essay to a specific school and not realize the application is sent to every school the student applied to, she said. However, if youâre applying to an Ivy League school or a smaller liberal arts college, then theyâre really looking at the whole package and the essay can be very important. At some of these schools, there are very few students who donât have near-perfect test scores and GPAs, so how do you stand out? Also, look at the Common Application essay promptsâ" one of them will speak to you, but you need to really read them. Kids are quick to eliminate a prompt, but I always ask them to go back and rethink. Theyâre looking at your essay, recommendations and activities to understand the whole picture of you. It all depends on where youâre applying, your grades and your test scores.
